Grade 8 Science

We took up the question 'Why can boats float?" and tied in the Titanic as a case study related to our unit.  Students started to learn about Pressure and completed sample calculations and questions from the textbook.

The rest of the week students were given time to work on their Science Fair Projects.  They have not been assigned any homework in Science other than to work on their Science Fair Projects.  At this point they should be nearing completion of their data collection or construction of their prototype so they can start working on their conclusion and discussion as their next steps.

Grade 7 Science

This week we wrapped up our second experiment on Heat Transfer.  We discussed the process of convection, conduction and radiation.  The students were asked to complete a worksheet on determining which method of heat transfer was occurring in different scenarios.   We will take this up next week.

The students were also given time to work on organizing information for their Science Fair Projects.  At this point they should be nearing completion of their data or prototype and moving on to drawing their conclusion and working on their discussion parts to their project.

Grade 6 Science

This week the students Electricity Project was due.  They did a fantastic job!  They submitted their written component and their house.  Next week, they will be presenting them to me and demonstrating their understanding of circuits and making circuits.  We will be moving on to another unit starting next week.

Students were also given time to share what they have done to this point in their Science Fair projects with other students in their class.  They should be nearing completion of their data or prototype and should be starting to work on making a conclusion.  We will be discussing these next steps they should be working on next week in class.

Grade 8 Science

This past week the students handed in their responses to Density/Buoyancy related questions as well as their follow up questions to the lab they conducted.  We started talking about Archimedes Principle and why some things float or sink.  They were given a handout that summarized some of the key points to read over.  8B will need to read over the handout and answer the question 'Why do boats float?' and 8A received a handout on Pressure and have been asked to complete the calculations for homework.  They will eventually have a test coming up on Density, Buoyancy and Pressure.

Students were also given time to organize information for their Science Fair Project.  Next week, they will be having a sharing period where they will discuss what they have done to this point (ex. Data collection, Prototypes built etc.).

Grade 7 Science

This past week, we discussed the process of Convection and took up a question that was assigned to the students from the previous experiment.  We performed another experiment in class investigating another type of Heat Transfer.  The students were asked to complete their observations and use the handouts they received to make a conclusion about which type of heat transfer the experiment was demonstrating.

Next week the students will also have an opportunity to share what they have done so far with their Science Fair topics.

Grade 6 Science

The students were given all their class time to work on their Electricity Project.  A final due date has been set for them which is next week Wednesday, November 26th, 2014.  They will need to have their house completed (they will put their circuits in when I am assessing them), their written component and their rubric.

Next week, the students will also be having a chance to share what they have done so far in their Science Fair Projects.

Grade 8 Science

The students were asked to complete some questions from the Grade 8 Science textbook.  I collected the questions from 8B and 8A has them for homework.  8A completed the Density/Buoyancy experiment and most students handed them in, if they did not finish in class it has been assigned for homework.  8B will be conducting the lab this next week.

The students should also be working on collecting their Data or building their Innovation for their Science Fair projects.

Grade 7 Science

The students were given class time to complete follow up questions to the experiment we conducted on Changes in States.  If they did not complete them in class, they were assigned for homework.

They were given some handouts on the different methods of Heat Transfer.  We conducted an experiment investigating one of the ways and the students were asked to use the handouts to identify which method our experiment illustrated and to summarize the heat transfer in their own words.

The students should also be working on their Data Collection or building their Innovation for their Science Fair Projects as homework as well.

Grade 6 Science

The students were given most of the class time to work on their Electricity Project.  They are reminded to remember to practice making the different types of circuits as they will be asked to demonstrate them for assessment.  For homework, they should be working on the written component to the Electricity Project as well as collecting data or starting to build their prototype for their Science Fair Topics.

Grade 8 Science

All students should have received their Viscosity/Density test at this point.  Please review and sign.  We started to look at Density and its relationship to Buoyancy this week.  Next week, the students will be conducting a lab investigating these concepts.

The students were also given time to organize and discuss their Science Fair topics.  Their topics were reviewed and given approval if they met the required criteria.  Students were advised on the next steps they should be moving on to regarding their Science Fair projects.

Grade 7 Science

This week and last week the students were given back their Heat test and were asked to get it signed.  One class received their Temperature and Forensics lab report marks and the other class will get theirs too.  They will be able to take them home next week.

We started looking at Changes of State in Matter under heat and Heating Curves.  We performed an in class experiment together called 'Ice to Water to Steam' where students were asked to plot and record the data we observed.  They are currently working on a handout with related questions to the lab.

The students were also given time to discuss their Science Fair topics and were asked to submit their topics for approval.  They were given advice and the next steps they should be continuing with.

Grade 6 Science

Last week and this week the students have been giving time to get started on their Electricity project.  They were asked to have a plan before starting to build.  Students have been reminded to continue to practice making the two different types of circuits discussed in class.  They were also given time to plan and organize their Science Fair Topics.  The were given a student Science Fair package and were asked to complete a portion of their Timeline to help with their planning.
