HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Grade 8 Science

We took up all their questions related to Work and Energy in their Mechanical Systems workbooks.  The students will begin constructing their Hydraulic Devices in the New year.

Grade 7 Science

The students finally completed and tested their Lunch boxes!  They did a fantastic job!  They handed in their written component as well.  In the New Year, we will be started a new unit on Pure Substances and Mixtures.

Grade 6 Science

The students handed in their Air and Flight booklets for marking.  They will receive them back in the New Year.  We will continue to study concepts related to Flight.

Grade 8 Science

The students have been studying various concepts related to Gas and Liquids.  They are starting a Hydraulic/Pneumatic assignment where they are required to design and build a device powered by a fluid system.  They received their proposals and will begin building next week.

Grade 7 Science

The students have been studying various concepts related to Heat.  They studied the different ways heat can transfer.  They have been working on a building project investigating these concepts and will test their final device next week.  They have a written component that is also due.

Grade 6 Science

The students have finished their unit on Electricity.  They are now learning about concepts on Air and Flight.  They have been assigned an activity booklet that they have been conducting various experiments related to the properties of air.  They should almost be done these activities and will be handing in their booklets for marking.

Grade 8 Science

The students reviewed safety rules and equipment.  They also studied various pieces of lab equipment that they will need to know for their safety test next week. We started their first unit and students conducted a lab investigating surface tension.  They had several follow up questions to answer related to the lab.  We will continue to cover this topic next week.

Grade 7 Science

The grade 7 students were introduced to various Science related safety equipment and rules.  Next week they will have a test covering this material.  They started learning about Heat and Temperature which will be the first unit covered.  Students used thermometers in class to take various temperature readings.  Next week, they will be learning how to write a proper lab report and will have their first assignment which they will prepare as a lab report.

Grade 6 Science

The grade 6 students were introduced to the large topics that we will be covering this year.  They were asked to complete a Science title page assignment for assessment.  They started some introductory activities on Electricity which will be the first unit covered.

Welcome to Ms. Chandra's Science Page 2015-2016!


Welcome back everyone!  I hope everyone had a great summer! 


I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as Ms. Chandra. I will be teaching Grade 6-8 Science at LKS and I will also be the Homeroom teacher for 8B.  I am looking forward to working again with the students, parents and staff.


This web page is now up and running.  I will be updating it regularly and it will help keep you updated with my Science program, upcoming topics, assignments, tests and projects. 


I look forward to meeting you and getting to know one another.

Grade 8 Science

Students should be done constructing their car.  They will be testing them this week for me to mark as be given time to work on their written component in class which will be due this week.

Grade 7 Science

Students should be done their structure by now.  They will be presenting them to me this week.  They will be given class time to work on the written component and it will be this week.

Grade 6 Science

Students had their space project due.  They are presenting their visuals to me and should have submitted their written components to me on Friday.

Grade 8 Science

At this point all the students should be constructing their mouse trap cars in class.  By next week, they should have a final model ready to test and modify.

Grade 7 Science

Students have continued to be given class time to build their Structures.  They are looking great!  There is a written component that they will need to start working on in the next few days as they finish up their building model.

Grade 6 Science

Students have continued to be given class time to work on their Space project.  They should be nearly done their visual at this point.  For homework they should begin working on their final written report for the project.  Next week, they will be given time in class to continue to work and a final due date will be given out.

Grade 8 Science

Students should have completed their 2 design sketches and submitted it to me for approval.  At this point, they should have gathered their materials to begin construction of their cars next week.

Grade 7 Science

I've tried to check in with all students to look over their Design Process and rough sketch of their Structures project.  If they haven't checked in with me, they should do so next week.  At this point, students should have their materials to begin constructing their Structures in class.

Grade 6 Science

Students should be done their research jot notes for their Space project.  They should have made a rough sketch of their model and shown it to me to be approved.  At this point, they should begin making their model in class.

Grade 8 Science

The students received back their Mechanical Advantage test.  Thanks to Parent Council, the students had a chance to experience a hands on workshop investigating Water Systems.  The students have been given a building assignment where they will be designing and constructing mousetrap powered cars.  They have all the assignment details and the evaluation rubric.

Grade 7 Science

The students received back their Structures test.  They have a structures assignment.  They have been given all the assignment details and the evaluation rubric.  They should be coming up with ideas, sketching their model, completing research and starting to collect materials to begin construction of their structure.

Grade 6 Science

Students received back their Space Test.  They currently have a Space Assignment.  They have been given all the assignment details and the evaluation rubric.  There are 3 parts to the assignment: research, a visual and a written component.  At this point, students should be finishing up their research jot notes and starting to brainstorm their visual idea for the project.

As well, with the support of Parent Council the students had an opportunity to experience a fun, hands on workshop investigating Life Systems with Scientist in the School last week.

Grade 8 Science

The students have been learning about Mechanical Systems.  Next week they will be having a test. They will need to review the different forms of energy, how to calculate work, levers and the mechanical advantage of simple machines.

Grade 7 Science

The students have been learning more about loads and forces that affect structures and structures stability.  Next week they will be having a test on all the material covered to date.  They will need to review the classification of structures, loads and forces that act on structures, the centre of gravity of structures and other ways to help strengthen a structures stability.

Grade 6 Science

The students have been learning about the planets in our Solar System.  Next week they will be having a test on all the material to date.  They will need to review the order of the planets from the sun, space vocabulary, and the characteristics of each planet.  They have two booklets they can use to review.

Grade 8 Science

The students received their Cell test back and were asked to get them signed.  One class has received their Gummy Bear Lab Reports back and next week the other class well.  This past week, we finished the unit by looking at advanced concepts of Cell division as well as started to look at Viruses and the Immune system.

Grade 7 Science

This past week, the students had to work collaboratively in a group to design and build a chair from newspaper with specific dimensions.  They needed to bring in their own materials to complete the task. Next week, we will be testing their structures and identify the key factors that make a structure stable.

Grade 6 Science

All the students should have received their Space package for this unit.  We started to work on some new terminology as well as discussing the planets found in our solar system.  Students have started to learn about the order of the planets and they will continue to learn about specific features of each planet.

Grade 8 Science

They students handed in their Gummy Bear lab reports and completed their Cell test.  They have no additional assignments or work due during the break.

Grade 7 Science

The students have begun their unit on Structures.  They were given back their Paper Chromatography lab reports.  After the break they will be completing a small building activity in class.

Grade 6 Science

The students handed in their Flight booklets.  Some classes received their package for their next unit on Space.  We will begin this unit after the break.

The students received a handout on DNA and looked at the components of DNA.  Next week, the students have their Gummy Bear Lab Reports due.  8B is due on Monday and 8A is due on Tuesday.  They have their unit test on Cells before the break.  8B is having their test on Wednesday and 8A is having their test on Thursday.  I will not be covering any new material next week.  They will be given time to study for their test.

Grade 7 Science

The students started to look at the different ways structures can be classified.  They looked at solid, frame, shell and combination structures.

Grade 6 Science

The students continued to work on their paper gliders and will be completing a booklet examining how specific parts of their airplane affect the pitch, roll and yaw motion of their airplane.

Some students received their marks for their Flight test.  They will be given out next week.

Grade 8 Science

The students were asked to complete a handout on Cell Specialization.  Some textbook questions were assigned to be completed as well. They finally were able to set up their Gummy Bear experiments and have looked at the first set of observations.  Next week, they will continue to look at their results and will eventually be typing this report up as a formal lab report for marking.  They will be having a large unit test coming up on all the concepts covered in their cell unit and have been advised to start reviewing from now.

Grade 7 Science

This week, the students finished up their follow up questions to their lab on Solubility and Temperature.  We took up the questions together and they were marked for handing in.  Next week, we will be beginning a new unit on Structures.

Grade 6 Science

This week, some of the classes wrote their Flight quiz, but given the number of school events, most will be writing it next week.  All the students should know what to study and have all the material to review for the test

Grade 8 Science


This week, the students were allowed to take their Microscope tests home and were asked to get them signed.  We took up the diagram they made of an onion slide this week.  They were given a new lab assignment that they will be completing next week for marking.  They will also start to learn a bit more on cell specialization and DNA next week.
 

Grade 7 Science

This week, the students finished up their Solubility and Temperature lab.  They were assigned a set of questions to answer.  We will continue to look at these concepts next week and wrap up the unit. All the students should have received their Pure Substances and Mixtures test and were asked to get them signed.  Some students have received their marks for their Chromatography Lab.  The rest of the marks will be returned next week.

Grade 6 Science

This week the students finished their Air stations and handed in their booklet for marking.  They will be having a test next week on the concepts covered to date on Flight.  They received an answer booklet regarding the Air stations.  They will be wrapping up the unit with one last activity that involves making paper airplanes and looking at the different components on a plane and how they affect flight.

Grade 8 Science

The students received their Microscope test marks today and were asked to record their mark in their agendas.  They will be allowed to take home the test next week.  This week, we continued to study our unit on Cells.  They students have started to prepare slides and will be making connections to the organelles we have been studying.

Grade 7 Science

This week, the students Chromatography Lab was due.  They conducted another experiment related to Solubility and Temperature that they should have recorded observations for in their notebooks.  Almost all students should have received their Science Fair marks by now.

Grade 6 Science

The students continued to work at their Air stations.  They should be done their booklet by their next class.  They also performed a few experiments that were related to Bernoulli's Principle.  We will be taking up this work next week and the students can expect a quiz coming up.  They have also started to receive their Science Fair marks.

Grade 8 Science

The students received their Science Fair project marks this week. Next week, they should be able to receive their Microscope test back.  This past week, the students started to learn about Plant and Animal Cells and Organelles. We will be continuing this topic next week.

Grade 7 Science

Last week, students had Scientist in the School come in and introduce their next unit on Structures.  It was a fun filled day.  Thank you to Parent Council for allowing this opportunity for the students to engage in hands on learning.

This past week, the students wrote their first test on Pure Substances and Mixtures.  They should receive their marks next week.  Next week, they have their Paper Chromatography Lab due.  It should be a formal typed up lab.  They will be wrapping up this unit next week with a few more experiments investigating different types of solutions.  The students also received their marks for their Science Fair projects this week.

Grade 6 Science

The students have been working on a variety of stations that experiment with the properties of Air.  They are recording their observations and making conclusions in a booklet.  They have also been studying Bernoulli's Principle and the forces that act on flight.  Next week, they should receive their Science Fair project marks.

Science Fair


Science Fair projects were due this week and were presented for marking.  The projects were fantastic! I’m proud of all our students and their hard work. The projects will be on display Monday night starting from 5:30-6:30pm with special recognition for the top projects at 6:00pm.

Grade 8 Science


This week we started a new unit on Cells.  The students were introduced to various Scientists that have contributed to our understanding of cells and the cell theory.  They also studied the different parts and functions of a microscope.  After the Science Fair, students will start to use the microscopes and learn how to prepare slides.

Grade 7 Science


Students had their Changes of State quiz returned and were asked to get them signed.  Students were given some summary sheets on concepts they had studied before the holiday break.  They completed an in class assignment that we took up to check their understanding of the Classification of Matter.  They also started to learn about different methods of separation for different types of mixtures.

Grade 6 Science

Students were asked to complete their Timeline and get it signed.  They were to add 3 Canadian contributions to Flight at the end of their Timeline.  They were given an activity booklet which they will be working from, learning about the properties of air.  They were asked to make predictions about each activity.
