Grade 8 Science

This past week the students prepared their plans for their Car Design Challenge.  They should be ready with materials to construct the cars after the break.  Their is an individual component to this assignment that they students will need to complete upon completion of their car. 


Their Mechanical Systems test was handed back.

This week the students were given practice and review questions for their Mechanical Systems test.  They wrote their test and we took up the majority of it.  They should be able to get them back next week.


Next week they will be starting their Mousetrap Car Design Challenge project.

This week we reviewed all the concepts related to this unit.  The students should have completed their entire package on Mechanical Systems.  They will be having a test next week on all the material.  They were also given their final assignment/project for this unit.

The students have continued to work through their Mechanical Systems workbook.  To date, they should have covered how to calculate the weight of an object, the work done in systems and be able to classify different types of levers.  We will eventually be starting a project soon.

We have moved on to our new unit on Mechanical Systems.  The students have learned how to calculate the weight of an object as well as the work done in various situations.  They should have a package on this unit that we will be working through.

This week we have finished our experiment related to Osmosis and Diffusion.  We covered a few more concepts related to this unit and will be moving on to Mechanical Systems.

The students were given their Cell test back and were asked to get them signed.  We have continued investigating a few more new related concepts to this unit.  We will be moving on to Mechanical Systems soon.

This week the students had their Cell project due.  They presented their models to me and were given their mark.  They had a workshop this week on Cells and some additional questions to answer related to this unit.  They can expect a test coming up shortly.

The students were given the entire week to work on their Cell project.  Their model, report, and rough copy/blueprint all are due on Monday. 


We will be reviewing the parts and functions of cells next week and then the students can expect a test.

Grade 8 Science

This week the students were given time to complete their Individual Report for their Cell project and their Rough Copy plan for their Model.  They were asked to show me their completed work for a process check.  After the break, they will work on constructing their model and a due date will be set.

This week the students were given their Cell project.  They have been given the week and next week to research and complete their individual report as well as to make a rough sketch/plan of their model by next week Friday. 

They will be given time after the break to work on the actual construction of their Cell model.  A due date will be assigned after the break.

They also received their Microscope test back and were asked to get them signed.

This week the students had time to study for their microscope test.  They practiced using the microscope and viewing samples. Next week, they will be given a Cell project that they will work on till the break.

This week we started our unit on Cells.  We covered the parts and functions of a microscope, how to use the microscope, specific scientists and their contributions to the cell theory and the basis of the cell theory.  The students will have a test on this material late next week.

This week the students finished up their Oil Spill activity and they will be moving on to start their new unit on Cells.  All pressure/buoyancy tests were returned and asked to be signed.  They will also have a Science workshop on Cells next week.

This week the students were able to see their Pressure/Buoyancy test marks.  Unfortunately, not everyone has written it yet, so I won’t be able to send it home until next week. They are currently working on an Oil Spill activity which will end this unit and then we will be moving on to our new unit on Cells.

This week the students wrote their Buoyancy and Pressure test.  We will be finishing our study of Liquids and Gases next week and then moving on to a new unit on Cells.

With all the events going on, the students did not have many Science classes this week.  They should have completed a set of Pressure questions and Pressure calculations.  I will be going over this material and then they can expect their test mid –next week. (Buoyancy, Archimedes’, Pressure)

This week we wrapped up our unit on Buoyancy. We discussed when objects float, sink and rise, Archimedes’ Principle and a few other related concepts.  We will be moving on to pressure and then a test date will be announced.
