Grade 8 Science

This past week the students prepared their plans for their Car Design Challenge.  They should be ready with materials to construct the cars after the break.  Their is an individual component to this assignment that they students will need to complete upon completion of their car.

Their Mechanical Systems test was handed back.

Grade 7 Science

Both classes should have received back their Solutions test by now and were asked to get them signed.

We continued to work through our Structures unit covering the following concepts: classification of structures, the centre of gravity, what make structure stable and lastly the forces that act on a structure.

After the break the students will eventually have a test on this material and will be working on a building project.

Grade 8 Science

This week the students were given practice and review questions for their Mechanical Systems test.  They wrote their test and we took up the majority of it.  They should be able to get them back next week.

Next week they will be starting their Mousetrap Car Design Challenge project.

Grade 7 Science

This week the students wrote their Solutions test.  One class was able to see their marks.
Once everyone has written it, I'll be able to return them next week.  We completed our unit on Pure Substances and Mixtures by looking at methods to separate mixtures/solutions.

We will be starting a new unit on Structures next week.

Grade 8 Science

This week we reviewed all the concepts related to this unit.  The students should have completed their entire package on Mechanical Systems.  They will be having a test next week on all the material.  They were also given their final assignment/project for this unit.

Grade 7 Science

This week the students conducted their experiment on rates of dissolving.  They shared their conclusions and we discussed all the factors that were involved in increasing the rate of dissolving.

They will be having their solutions test next week.  They should have handouts, and textbook work to use to review for their test.

Grade 8 Science

The students have continued to work through their Mechanical Systems workbook.  To date, they should have covered how to calculate the weight of an object, the work done in systems and be able to classify different types of levers.  We will eventually be starting a project soon.

Grade 7 Science

This week we reviewed our vocabulary on Solutions and took up some questions that were assigned.  The students broke down how a solution forms and will be conducting an experiment related to the factors that affect the rate of dissolving in a solution. Once we complete the experiment and discuss the results the student can expect a test on all this material.

Grade 8 Science

We have moved on to our new unit on Mechanical Systems.  The students have learned how to calculate the weight of an object as well as the work done in various situations.  They should have a package on this unit that we will be working through.

Grade 7 Science

The students have been looking at how a solution forms and the different types of solutions.  They have learned how to calculate the concentration of a solution.  We will be moving on to the factors that affect the rate of dissolving and solubility.  Eventually there will be a test on this material.

Grade 8 Science

This week we have finished our experiment related to Osmosis and Diffusion.  We covered a few more concepts related to this unit and will be moving on to Mechanical Systems.

Grade 7 Science

This week the students had a peer and self-evaluation of their Paper Chromatography labs.  We continued with another section on Solutions and previewed the vocabulary for this section.

We will be conducting an experiment related to the different types of solutions and factors that affect the rate of dissolving in solutions.

Grade 8 Science

The students were given their Cell test back and were asked to get them signed.  We have continued investigating a few more new related concepts to this unit.  We will be moving on to Mechanical Systems soon.

Grade 7 Science

This week the students handed in their Paper Chromatography Lab.  We started evaluating them.  We will be moving on to studying solutions, types of solutions and factors that affect the rate of dissolving.

Their Pure Substances and Mixtures test was returned and asked to be signed.

Grade 8 Science

This week the students had their Cell project due.  They presented their models to me and were given their mark.  They had a workshop this week on Cells and some additional questions to answer related to this unit.  They can expect a test coming up shortly.

Grade 7 Science

This week the students wrote their Pure Substances and Mixtures test and started working on their Paper Chromatography Formal Lab assignment.

Both classes will conduct their experiment next week and will be given time to complete the rest of the assignment.

Friday, January 10, 2020

Grade 8 Science

The students were given the entire week to work on their Cell project.  Their model, report, and rough copy/blueprint all are due on Monday.

We will be reviewing the parts and functions of cells next week and then the students can expect a test.

They will be having their workshop: https://scihigh.ca that was rescheduled before the break on Cells next week.

Grade 7 Science

This week the students reviewed the new vocabulary list from our Pure Substances and Mixtures unit.  There were given some handouts to help with the concepts and they will have a test on this information next week.

They were also given an assignment/experiment that they will be conducting next week and writing up as a formal lab report.

Most students received their Lunchbox project marks.  The rest will be handed back next week.
